Our family has been reading through The Book of Belonging: Bible Stories for Kind & Contemplative Kids by Mariko Clark. Last night, we read the story of Ruth and Naomi, two migrant women trying to find home, safety, and sustenance in a world that leaves them with limited options. Following both God’s commands and the compassion within his own heart, a man named Boaz shares his resources and advocates for these women in order to ensure that they can be safe and flourish. This story felt so timely.
What I appreciated most as we read the story together was the mindful moment that Mariko Clark offered at the end. She brought this story from a different time, culture, and place into our present-day reality. As other wise people have noted through the years, she reminded us to look for the helpers in times when the world feels dark and dangerous.
“Think about your community. Who needs help reaching belonging? Who are the helpers? How can you be one?”
As we reflected on these questions, I was struck by how quickly my kids responded. They’re paying attention to the people and situations in their midst. They’re noticing pain and need. They’re recognizing that they can play a part in helping others to experience love and belonging. May we all have such pure and childlike hearts.
In the midst of the chaos and suffering around us, I invite you to consider Mariko’s reflection questions. “Think about your community. Who needs help reaching belonging? Who are the helpers? How can you be one?”
